How to Prepare to Go Back to School

By Debora Aberastury on August 6, 2017

August is approaching, and soon enough, classes will start up again. If you have been spending a lot of time relaxing this summer break, and need some tips on how to get ready to go back, here are three of them.

1. Rehydrate & Get in your fruits and veggies

There is no harm in having splurged on ice cream again and again this summer, nor any harm in attending barbeque after barbeque — that is what summer is for, after all! But now that classes are rapidly starting, you should start detoxing in a way. Drink a lot of water, and start getting in your fruits and veggies back into your diet.

Eating right and keeping hydrated will give you that burst of energy and motivation you need to go head first into the semester. Keep a water bottle with you at all times these last couple of weeks of summer, and chose to snack on fruits instead of granola bars. And when it comes to meals, try to incorporate more vegetables into your meals. Every little bit helps!

2. Declutter & Organize

If you are living at home and commuting, or heading back to campus to your dorm, make sure to declutter and organize your bedroom before summer ends. You have likely accumulated a lot of things throughout the summer, and it is best to leave your room the tidiest it can be before you start up your semester.

Start by looking through your closet for anything that you know you won’t wear next summer, and start a bag of clothes to donate to your local Goodwill or charity organization. Next, take the summer clothes that you won’t need until next summer and store it somewhere safe and out of the way. Finally, make sure that you leave your room as clean as possible — get rid of any receipts that are lying around, dust the shelves, look through any letters or bills you have on your desk, etc.

Doing this will allow you to start off your year on a good foot, whether you live in a dorm or commute from home. Think of it as just getting ready for fall.

3. Finish up your summer bucket list — and fast!

If you can’t imagine going back to essays and reading without taking one more swim, do it! Make a small list of three to five things that you must do before summer ends, and make plans to end your summer on a high note.

Go to that ice cream place one more time, head to the amusement park, lay in the sun, catch a summer blockbuster — do whatever your heart desires before your head and schedule are filled with deadlines, essays, and more deadlines.
